How It WorksSafer Streets Trust came into being in August 1997 when a group of professionals and volunteers gave their time and experience to establish Charitable Trust number AK/868843. In 2005, the Trust merged with the Young New Zealanders Foundation. The core business of the merged body is "supporting, educating and empowering young people in their families and in the wider community". In short we call this our "Youth Development Strategy". Our fundraising efforts are all aimed towards achieving this "core business" in our own actions or through support to our associate-partner charities.
The Foundation raises funds for two main groups of activities, namely, youth health and youth achievement projects. We are sometimes asked "How much of my money goes to the children I want to help?" As a Charitable Trust we pass on everything we can after legitimate costs are recovered. It is impossible to calculate the percentage given because funds are often recycled several times through grants and product sales. Because we do our own fundraising, and do not employ agents, the more people give, the higher the percentage of what is earned is spent on saving children's lives. Please note that we do not act as agents of other charities, but work with them as our partners. We are grateful for the outstanding support we receive from the community throughout New Zealand. We wish to acknowledge especially the sponsorship and valuable contributions from many helpers, including our:
These people help us to help the wider community. A variety of techniques is used to meet a wide range of community needs. We find that personally telephoning families enables us to invite people to join us in creating safer communities for everyone. This very cost effective method allows us to ensure that the maximum funds donated are available for disbursement. We retain a small staff to meet administrative, IRD and other professional obligations.
You may receive a telephone call between 10:00AM - 8:30PM at your home inviting you to donate to our campaigns. If we interrupt you at an inconvenient time, please do not hesitate to tell us. We will always try to call when it suits your circumstances.
Please Help our Young People by Making a DonationThe Foundation is able to receive donations by cheque, credit card, 0900 number and automatic payment. A credit card payment is a very safe way of donating because we give you several ways to check out our credentials. Ask our fundraisers about this when they phone and beware of impostors! We accept:
This is another extremely safe way to donate and the 0900 number you phone depends on how much you are donating to the Foundation. The amount you donate will appear on your next phone bill. It gives you an excellent record to check. Our operator will tell you what to do. It's so simple! Should you wish to donate on a regular basis, we are able to set up an automatic payment with your bank. Although every donation is acknowledged with a letter of thanks and a tax receipt, at the end of the financial year, you will automatically receive a receipt for the entire amount donated during the year. If you prefer to send your donation by mail, your cheque is welcome. Once we have received and processed it, you will be sent an acknowledgement and receipt. We like to send you a receipt. This is an important part of our audit trail, and our responsibility to our community of supporters.
Beware Of ImpostorsIt is not always easy to know if the person on the phone is genuinely calling from the organisation they claim to represent. Sometimes they make statements like: "You gave to The Young New Zealanders Foundation last year (or earlier this year). Would you support us again?" A fundraiser who is so blatantly asking for money is NOT from the Young New Zealanders Foundation. Here's how to tell if the person calling you really is from the Young New Zealanders Foundation:
When you challenge impostors about who they work for, they will often hang up or terminate the phone call. You can be confident that you have caught them out! Please ask if the person calling you works for the Young New Zealanders Foundation. If they do not then your donation will not come to this Foundation. Many of our supporters tell us they have been misled. As you can see from our call centre addresses we are based on Auckland's North Shore and Wellington Central. We have even had impostors tell potential donors "The Browns Bay office has closed" (that was prior to our shifting!) If you use Caller ID please don't give your details to any caller who has "Caller ID Withheld". To determine our local numbers please click here. If you are in any doubt then please phone your local office or call us toll free 0800 800 525. Fundraiser PositionsThe Young New Zealanders Foundation is able to develop and implement its community programmes only through the hard work and dedication of its fundraisers.
These teams work five days a week between 2.30pm and 8.30pm. Sometimes, team members may also work on Saturdays on a voluntary basis. Fundraisers are provided with a caring and pleasant environment in which to work and are offered the opportunity to develop their professional skills with an induction period followed by comprehensive, on-going training. The members of our contact teams are conscientious and believe in the values and philosophies of the Young New Zealanders Foundation.
Professional contact staff employed by the Young New Zealanders Foundation support one another to maintain a harmonious and focused work environment and to aid other less experienced members of the team.
While the Foundation always welcomes donations, there is an awareness aspect to its telephone presentations. The more people who are aware of the Foundation's child abuse, drug and alcohol, and suicide prevention programmes, the safer our streets and communities will be. While experience in fundraising is not a prerequisite for joining The Young New Zealanders Foundation fundraising team, having a strong command of spoken English, enthusiasm, honesty, persistence and a strong community spirit means you are someone we always wish to hear from. Few job opportunities have the satisfaction of helping others while earning their income. All our fundraisers make a positive difference to other people's lives. How many other occupations can say that?
