To all Cantabrians: Help for You

and anyone struggling with change, grief and loss.

The Young New Zealanders Foundation has prepared special material for individual students and young people, their parents and adult carers, school teachers and other youth leaders.

These ideas can help individuals clarify their values, abilities and establish some of the skills needed by young people to help them keep going.

  • Help for parents to guide their young out of chaos into moving forward.
  • Help for young people to cope with tramatic memories – to Keep Going!
  • Help for teachers with a resource to use in the classroom.

We at the Foundation hope you find our range of materials helpful for you and your family. These have been developed with the help of donations from our faithful supporters.

Introduction to Parent's Package

The COURAGE — Be My Friend package for Parents contains two items and a video link prepared by the Young New Zealanders Foundation:

  • A parent's guide, developed especially for parents and those who care for children and young people.
  • A special Young Person's Journal to for each of your children / young people. Being able to talk about and record the events happening around them may have a therapeutic effect on students and help begin the process of moving on. Realising and understanding that they are not the only ones feeling sad, angry, helpless or hopeless can greatly help children deal with their losses. Grieving cannot and should not be done alone. Working with others in class groups, with teachers, or with parents, siblings, and friends, can help in the grieving process while healing in healthy ways. Dealing with grief in healthy ways, not suppressing or ignoring it, can lead to a more productive life and is an important process to bring healing.
  • A video of author and family therapist Ron Phillips telling the story via YouTube. Ron tells the story in a slightly different way from what is written here and in the book Gem of the First Water. You may prefer to let your children or young people watch Ron telling the story in his own words, as he is a very proficient storyteller.

For Young Cantabrians

At the Young New Zealanders Foundation we really admire the way the people of Canterbury have pulled together after the terrible earthquakes, and are helping one another as best they can. We feel for you very much and have prepared a "Young Person's Journal" to help you in the months ahead. The Young Person's Journal is for you to record your thoughts, experiences and memories. There are things you can do right now:

The DVD prepared by the Young New Zealanders Foundation

The DVD features the author and family therapist, Ron Phillips, telling the story 'Canyon of Sadness'. Ron is an accomplished story teller and has successfully used his book Gem of the First Water countless times in his therapy with young people.

You may want to play the section with Ron telling the story in his own words instead of reading it yourself.

The contents of the DVD, provided in the kit, may also be viewed on this website, or Ron Phillips' TSI website.
