Something in Common
Materials
- Pen and paper for each player.
- Cards (one hand of five cards per player) from the sample card sets.
- Chairs arranged in a tight circle and facing outwards.
Sample Card Sets
The commonality between the sample card sets is a little obscure – you may like to simplify it to start with by using the blank card set to make your own card set(s). Click here to download the sample card sets...
Instructions
Students are in groups of six. Each student is given one of the hands of cards with five numbers. The card sets have only one thing in common. The students are to try to discover what that is, but …
- they cannot speak or turn to anyone in their group,
- they cannot show their card to anyone,
- they can only communicate by writing notes to each other,
- written notes must not include more than three numbers.
Afterwards
After the group has found the solution (printed below each sample card set) to their card set, ask them...
- How did you feel during the game?
- How did not being able to speak affect you?
- Which notes were helpful?
- Were there any notes you could not understand?
- Did anyone take charge of the game?
- What would you do differently next time?
